The Best Social Media Marketing Platform For Interior Designers
Are you confused about what is the best social media marketing platform for interior designers?
It’s hard to keep up with all the social media outlets.
New ones are coming online all the time, and some are better suited for certain purposes than others. Instagram has captured a lot of attention in the design community this year, whereas last year the focus was on Pinterest.
So where should you be putting your efforts and marketing dollars?
Some marketing experts will tell you to play it safe and list yourself with all the major players (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Pinterest, and now Instagram). The more eyes the better.
That’s strong branding, but it probably isn’t practical unless you have a social media specialist keeping all those sites fresh for you.
When we put the question to designers in our 2014-15 Interior Design Fee & Salary Survey, the clear favorite was Houzz. Half the designers in our survey generated leads via Houzz last year, compared to only a third via Facebook. Close behind, in third place, was having a blog on your firm’s website. The other social media platforms don’t even come close, with about one in five designers saying they received leads through LinkedIn and Pinterest. Few had much success with Twitter or YouTube.
If you are currently using Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest or Twitter and they are working for you, by all means stick with them. If you’re one of the many interior designers who still hasn’t made up their mind about social media marketing, then I recommend starting with Houzz – unless you are doing only commercial work. Any Instagram fans out there?

Agree. Have had two Houzz leads in the past two weeks; unusual, as I’ve maybe had one every month before this. Reminds me I need to add new projects! I also like participating in the “Design Dilemna” section
Doug, are you doing paid membership with Houzz?I have a free account because I have not convinced te paid would be worth it. I have won the Designer award for Houzz 3 years in the row, but looks like all people do is add my images to their collections. I have had 2 leads in that 3 years. I have not found Houzz helpful at all . Just people asking me where I get every tile and piece, so free advices (on designs my client paid thousands of dollars)that took way too much of my time to answer so I do not anyomore. Especially when these people have zero interest in scrolling down previous questions. There can be 6 questions on the same paint or tile. I have started resenting Houzz.
Are you speaking of paid Houzz advertising where your photos are prominently placed and shown when viewers in the area are searching on Houzz? I’ve considered advertising on Houzz but wasn’t sure it it was worth a one year investment.
I have the same concern about paying for houzz advertising.
I think that Pinterest and Facebook have almost equal impact on the visits to my site and blogs. I have several and they are my connection with potential clients.
I use paid HOUZZ and 90% of my business comes from it. I put up every project and work hard to get every review. It has been tremendous. I get the hesitation on the cost but for me it has made ALL the difference. This year I hired a digital marketing specialist. I see some difference with that and I do believe it takes time. I could not keep up with that task myself, so my person is doing it and I like seeing the constant fresh presence she is building.
