The Secret Life of Interior Designers

Stories.  Do we have stories!  In order to enhance the lives and living spaces of their clients, interior designers need to get to know the insides of their homes and of their personalities.  That can lead to uncovering some unexpected things.  Embarrassments and awkward encounters are occupational hazards of sorts, and discretion is a professional requisite.

In this podcast, Gail and Erin asked some of their Boardroom Group members to share some of their most memorable work stories.  The result was a fairly free-flowing exchange of amusing, alarming and frustrating incidents involving clients, team members, and contractors and subcontractors.

As one designer commented, “We are gatekeepers and secret keepers.”  So, without naming any names, designers recounted how they accidentally discovered clients’ most intimate items, how they tactfully managed clients in the buff, and how they dealt with highly demanding or ill-kempt clients, damaged goods, and clueless contractors.  “You find very questionable items.” acknowledged one designer.

Everyone shared a good laugh and commiserated with each others’ misadventures.  Once again, the truth proved more incredible than fiction.  “We just can’t make this stuff up,” quipped Erin.

In the end, designers unanimously agreed, “We love our clients.”  And although they may sometimes be startled, chagrined or fit to be tied, they appreciate that they have a special status in working with clients and are mindful of the trust clients place in them.  “We have to be careful,” said one designer.  “We have [to be discreet]”.  People let us inside their homes and inside their lives.”

No doubt you have your own memorable stories to share.  To hear the details of those the group related, listen to the entire podcast.  It’s bound to put a smile on your face.

Note: There are some stories told in this episode that may not be appropriate for the workplace, so be mindful of others while listening.
