Goal Setting Strategies That Will Help You 10x Your Results
Have you been reviewing your goals at least once a month to make sure you’re on track?
You might be surprised that very few people in business take the time to write down their goals, let alone keep themselves on track?
According Brian Tracy:
“Only 3% of adults have clear, written, specific, measurable, time-bounded goals, and by every statistic, they accomplish ten times as much as people with no goals at all.”
Why does writing down goals make such a difference? It makes the goals real and tangible, especially if you review them frequently. Your brain automatically realizes that you need to make a plan and take action to achieve those goals, but if they aren’t written down, your brain does not automatically fill in the “plan and action” blanks.
Even though Q1 is history, you can still write down your goals. Here are some tips from one of our colleagues, Maria Bayer:
1. Make a list of all of your accomplishments from last year, both personally and professionally. Take a few minutes to read your list.
You will be amazed at how many things you really achieved! This step will put you in a positive frame of mind for step #2.
2. On a piece paper or a whiteboard, write categories of goals that you’d like to accomplish. Examples to help you get started:
- Revenue
- Clients to acquire
- Outsourcing of tasks
- Health
- Family
- Spiritual
- Learning
Then list everything you can think of in each category that you’d like to achieve in this year.
Don’t censor yourself.
3. Review the list and choose your top 5-10 goals.
You can’t do everything; so choose the top goals that will make the biggest impact.
Make sure the goals you set are specific. You want to include both tangible and intangible goals (an intangible goal might be to feel confident winning clients), and that you write your goals out in the present tense.
4. Create a goal/vision board.
I’ve used this strategy with both myself and coaching clients with great success.
I know that if you take the time to follow this strategy step by step, it will be so much more empowering for you than how you may have done it in the past.
And ultimately, you’ll reach your goals faster than those who choose to wing it, or worse, do nothing.

Such great positive advice -I intend to make this a monthly activity
Thank you so much
Elaine
You are so welcome!
Thanks for the great reminders. When I was in school and working retail in a furniture store, my manager would give me my goal of how much she wanted me to sell for the month. Every month I wrote down her goal for me in my planner and next to her number I wrote down my own personal goal which was always substantially higher. I would end up exceeding my own goal. Writing goals down is very powerful.
That’s why you’ve been so successful, Kathy!
