Be Uncomfortable: The Best Way to Build Your Interior Design Business

Working as a coach, I see that change is uncomfortable for many people.

And I see that it is often the #1 reason they never achieve great things.  The best way break through your personal barriers and accomplish more than others is to do things that others are unwilling to do, or are afraid to do.

Ask yourself:  Why am I afraid of trying something new?

Are you concerned that you won’t be perfect the first time?  Or maybe you will be ridiculed or embarrassed, that you won’t like it, that it won’t be easy, that you won’t be good at it?

If you don’t find yourself having any of these concerns I’m talking about here, it means you aren’t pushing yourself hard enough.

Ask yourself:  What can I do to push through my fears or concerns?

The benefit of doing something new might open new doors to something few people will ever experience.  Understanding that excitement of achieving something new can far outweigh your feelings of fear.

You must learn to ignore your feelings, just push forward and do it anyway.

Ask yourself:  What is the first step you must take?

  • Is it research?  Schedule it on your calendar.
  • Is it a phone call?  Find out who to contact, write bullet points of what you want to discuss and schedule the phone call on your calendar.

When you commit to your first steps, you will gain momentum and be more likely to follow through and accomplish great things.

I often hear interior designers complaining that they have no business.

When I discuss this complaint, I’ve found simply that they aren’t taking the necessary steps to grow their businesses.

Understand that your checkbook balance is the reflection of how many relationships you have built.

If it is scraping bottom, then you don’t know enough people, the right people or you don’t know how to get them to refer you.  Or, when you do get that referral, you may not know how to close that person’s business.

Which one is it for you?
