The Power of Meditation in Business and Life

In a time when we often let ourselves be at the mercy of a constant barrage of “other peoples’ priorities” (phone, text, email, social media, etc.) as well as the need to fill every moment of the day with “to do” lists –  the value of meditation has never been greater.

Many people have found the value of starting their day with meditation and may also end their day the same way.  Like any other worthwhile habit, it takes commitment and it will take some time to really feel the benefit, just as with an exercise regimen.  But just like with an exercise routine, keep it up and you will see and feel positive results in the long-term.  When you look at the positive value and power of meditation in business, it should make sense that the value extends to life in general.

Some of the benefits of sitting quietly and focusing your mind include a reduction in stress as well as an increase in performance and creativity.  It can also help in focus and concentration, more effective decision-making, sharpen intuition and decrease anger and anxiety.  Imagine how these benefits can be increased when you encourage your team to adopt the habit of meditation.  That creates a workplace where everyone looks forward to coming to work and strengthens the effectiveness of the entire team.

Scientific research has found that meditation increased the cortical thickness in the hippocampus which processes memory as well as the ability to learn new things.  It helps with long-term memory which is a definite advantage from giving a presentation to a client, to remembering your employees’ birthdays.  It also helps with the ability to learn new things.  As far as the value to life in general, this part of the brain is where Alzheimer’s creates chaos; so another reason that daily meditation is worth creating the habit.

In addition, meditation has been shown to positively affect the amygdala and prefrontal cortex, which controls mindfulness, fear response and decision-making.  Research shows additional value for those who meditate for the long term as they tend to be more courageous but also with a slower reaction to situations involving their emotions as they are less reactive and have more time to respond to the situation.  They are also not only better but more efficient decision-makers.

If you do not currently include meditation in your daily life, why not do a bit of research for yourself or talk to a friend who does meditate and commit to a daily meditation routine for the next 90 days.  If your team is willing, why not challenge them to try it also and by the end of that 90-day timeframe, I think you will feel a positive difference. Meditation helps us to recognize our thoughts and feelings without letting them control us.  It helps to develop clarity and calm despite the circumstances and even better sleep.

Try using the power of meditation to improve your business and your life.
